There is a side to Brandon Bonville that I don’t like to show. A side of me that many of you reading this have probably never seen. A horrible, relentless monster that I am constantly trying to tame and lock up… What is this monster you ask? This monster is… my competitiveness.
Most of you (hopefully) have never seen this very different side of my personality. Whether it’s basketball, soccer, croquet, Jenga, Risk or seeing who can stack chairs faster; I am extremely competitive. I do my best to keep it at bay and not show it, but there are times where I can’t contain myself and this side of me escapes!
Rewind two nights ago…
I am involved in a men’s soccer league and we play every Monday night. Most of the guys on this team know that I work in a church and specifically in student ministry, so we have been able to have some cool conversations about religion, God and other stuff. Anyway, we start this game and from the get go our team realizes that the referee is clearly giving the other team calls to benefit them. This particular referee actually played on another team with most of the guys we were competing against! So the game went on… We would get shoved to the ground and not get a call. Then we would accidentally breathe on one of their players and would get carded and sent off the field (almost 100% true…). Finally, a tipping point… As I am running up the field with the ball, a guy absolutely clobbers me and sends me into a somersault. I look back at the referee who glances my way and tells everyone to play on.
It’s this moment that puts me over the edge… I stand up and yell at the ref, “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!” Of course he ignores me and we continue to play… but in that moment I couldn’t believe what I had just done. I had let my competitiveness overshadow Christ in my life. If you’re reading this and you’re an athlete or competitive in anyway, you totally understand what I am saying.
As I have been reflecting on this and how I acted a verse came to mind… Colossians 3:17, which says, “And WHATEVER you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
This verse is exactly what I needed. It was the perfect reminder that whatever it is that I am doing: playing soccer, eating at a restaurant, driving, or playing drums. Whatever it is, as a believer we are to do it in Christ’s name. We are to represent Him in everything that we do. No matter how bad the referee is…. We are still called as believers to represent Christ. And the reason that we do this is so that when those times of trouble come where we could complain or get upset, we show mercy and have patience instead. Through this, people will see that there is something different about you and begin to ask questions. And BOOM before you know it, you’re sharing the Gospel!
So whatever activity or hobby that you have, do it to the best of your ability and do it in the name of Christ. You represent so much more than just yourself. You represent Christ.
